Portuguese Passport Documents

An individual who is born on or before 19th December 1961 in Goa or Daman & Diu can avail for Portuguese Passport to become Portugal Citizens, as Portugal Government had not maintained any records of Portuguese Citizens before the year 1961 so those people are required to do their Birth Transcription in Portugal at Conservatoria dos Registos Centrais in Lisboa Portugal to obtain a Portuguese Passport.

Portuguese Passport Documents

Documents required to obtain a Portuguese Birth Transcription are:

  • Birth Certificate (issued by sub-registrar and should be in the Portuguese Language)
  • Residence Certificate
  • Additional Residence Certificate (issued by Mamlatdar or Panchayat, should mention that you are a resident of Daman & Diu or Goa from birth during 1st Jan 1974 to 31st December 1975)
(All the above three documents Birth Certificate, Residence Certificate, and Additional Residence Certificate should be attested by Notary.)
  • A Photo ID card (photo ID card issued by the government for e.g. Driving license, Passport, Voters ID, PAN Card, etc.) 

Documents required to obtain a Portuguese Birth Transcription and Marriage are:

  • Birth Certificate (issued by sub-registrar and should be in the Portuguese Language)
  • Birth Certificate of Spouse
  • Marriage Certificate
  • Residence Certificate
  • Additional Residence Certificate (issued by Mamlatdar or Panchayat, should mention that you are a resident of Daman & Diu or Goa from birth during 1st Jan 1974 to 31st December 1975)
  • Indian Passport
  • Police Clearance Certificate
To apply for Portuguese Passport you should first know that all documents should be submitted in Portuguese Language and if it is on English you should translate your documents required to apply for Portuguese Passport in the Portuguese Language.

Documents that are before 19th December 1961 in Goa or Daman and Diu are in the Portuguese Language so there is no need for translation but documents like residence certificate, additional residence certificate which is in the English language are needed to be translated in the Portuguese Language.

Portugal Passport authority accepts only documents that are in the Portuguese language except for Indian Passport the only document in the English language is acceptable by Portuguese Passport Authorities. The rest of all original documents are to be submitted as it is.

    I am writing to you because I am facing a dilemma on the application process. I want to apply for a portuguese passport through virtue of my father being born before 1961 in Goa. His name in Birth certificate is Portuguese (Pedro), while his name as an adult is English (Peter). This English name is in all our identity documents such as passport, Birth Certificate, etc.
    How do we correct this as his name is different in these documents. Please help ...
